It was circa 1994 that the ‘Shia Educational Association’ (SEA) came into being as a brainchild of some intellectuals of the community who felt the need to eliminate illiteracy from the society and they selected education as a tool in achieving this goal. They were led by Late Dr. S. Agha Hadi Masih, Head, Department of Zoology, Shia Post Graduate College, Lucknow.
It’s very satisfying to see that over the years this small initiative has turned out to be very effective in changing the lives of many students. We have reached out to help many deserving students from the financially weaker section of the society of all faiths and belief. The kind of results we are getting strengthens our resolve to extend our reach and we’ll involve many more like minded people to participate in this noble cause.
The roots of the burgeoning tree of SEA can be trace back to 27 years back in history as a small initiative from a group of few educators. The main objective of SEA is educational upliftment of under privilege communities of society. SEA has being engaged in achieving his goal from its inception and has undertaken some other welfare activities which involve extending help to needy people of diverse faiths.
October, 2020 marks a turning point in the journey of the association because it was one fine day of this month when a new realisation occurred and office bearers of Shia Educational Association (SEA) felt the necessity of increasing their efforts. It was time when the whole world was battling with Covid-19 and the Pandemic situation had depleted the saving of lower and middle class of society. There was an uncertainty and fear of losing near one and good future. This had led to dropping out of many bright students from their schools. When a lady of well to do family approached us to seek our help in financing for her ward fee. We not only catered to her needs but this incident forced us to think about plight of many others who faced similar kind of situation and are hesitant to share their worries.
The volunteers of SEA undertook a survey of the nearby localties Muftiganj, Chowk, Hussainabad, Saadatganj, Kazmain etc of Lucknow to make an assessment of the economic fallout of Covid-19. We met families who had lost all their possessions and were not able to make their ends meet. In such a grave situation where the survival itself threatened, education was sure to take backseat. There was a dire need to spot right students from the poor section of the society and pull them out of this mess. SEA made it’s the best efforts to reach out to such students, paid their fees and helped them to rescue their studies. We were deeply touched by the stories of apathy shared by the victims many of them complained of how their wards were forced out of schools due to their financial crisis. We upped the ante and were slowly able to see the glow and smile on the faces of our beneficiary students.
It has been over TWO years since then and looking back in time we feel content to see that meager efforts have paved off in a big way and SEA is making a difference in the lives of many.
